Boo!
It’s Halloween.
That time of year when we all hide behind masks and try to out scare each other in an attempt to keep the real ghouls away.
It got me thinking about all the ways we women in business HIDE when really we NEED to be seen.
It’s personally taken me an aaage to really allow myself to be SEEN.
I hid my light behind so many bushels I’m surprised I ever found my way out.
It didn’t always feel like hiding. I part-owned a clinic for many years. I felt visible enough.
We had a website, a shop front, articles in magazines etc BUT,
if I’m perfectly honest I was HIDING behind all that.
I was protected by being in a partnership. I was loved and cared about.
We worked well together, it was SAFE and I left much of the ‘talking’ up to my lovely partners.
Why?
Because the marketing, talking about what I do, putting myself out there and actually ALLOWING the world to see me for who I am scared the s£#$ out of me.
I didn’t really have the words for it then, but I do now.
When I broke it down to its core I realised I felt real, seat of the pants terror.
When I asked or was asked by my coaches ‘what’s the worst thing that can happen if you…host a meetup, give a talk, make an offer, go to this networking event, go ‘live’?’
My answer was, and is, it feels like I’m going to die.
There were other answers too of course…
I’ll be laughed at
I’ll forget everything
I’ll sound like an idiot
People will ridicule me
People won’t like me
People won’t like what I have to say
They’ll judge me
I’ll be visibly nervous
I’ll judge me
The list goes on depending on the activity, but you get the picture.
But bottom line is ‘I feel like I’m going to DIE!’
This coming from someone who has a degree in drama and dance! I used to perform in front of an audience for goodness sake (not for a long time mind you 😊).
AND I know it’s not just me. You know how I know…apart from seeing it come up my clients again and again?
There’s an actual book about it by Michael Klepper & Robert Gunther called ‘I’d Rather DIE Than Give a Speech’.
Bloody hell.
No wonder so many of us struggle to put ourselves out there.
No wonder we keep our light hidden.
We’re afraid it will be snuffed out.
And that is really depressing.
Literally.
That is a whole load of energy holding us back in the guise of keep us from getting hurt.
A ton of ENERGY we could be using to EXPAND and grow as people and in our businesses.
I’m here to tell you that the world needs your LIGHT to shine bright.
I’m proof that if you do the mindset work to lift that heavy restrictive energy, to transmute it into lighter more expansive energy, you will change the worst that can happen from real, in your nervous system terror, to real in your nervous system POWER.
THEN instead of saying ‘No’ when you want to say ‘Yes’ you will find yourself saying YES to all sorts of exciting opportunities and experiences.
AND more importantly, you will find that you are saying YES to YOU.
